Parabolica #27 - Pika Labs, the Gen-2 Killer?
Updates:
MGL was a blast! I hosted a session on how to use Generative AI tools for performance creative. If you didn’t sign up you missed out on a ton of value. I’m grateful to Shamanth for the opportunity. Sign up for their next cohort in early 2024.
Check out this Efficient Spend podcast episode I guested. Subscribe to Paul’s podcast so you stay up to date on how to manage your media spend efficiently. Hope you enjoy it!
Pika Labs
Pika Art is an img2vid & text2vid AI where you upload an image and it creates a video with temporal coherence for you.
Oftentimes, with Gen-2 the video that’s being generated doesn’t match your expectations so you stop and regenerate until you find one that fits.
This eats up your credits with Gen-2 and is not cost-friendly for people who can’t afford it but want to create with Generative AI.
With Pika Art, you can batch create dozens of images first in Stable Diffusion or MidJourney and then choose the ones you like to animate from. This workflow is much quicker and cost effective.
I got access to the closed beta on Discord and I wanted to share some of my creations:
text2video
prompt: “a dog eating spaghetti”
prompt: “eggs sizzling on a pan, steam, flames”
prompt: “the inside of a black hole, explosions, lightning, clouds, gas, 4k”
prompt: “the inside of a wormhole, 4k”

Drawbacks
You are limited to 3 seconds.
You have to try a few times to get the desired look.
You will share these two drawbacks with Gen-2 as well as most AI tools. With open-source you can get around the duration limit imposed by companies because you run it on your own machine.
Gen-2’s new img2vid
As I was writing this Gen-2 actually just released its own img2vid feature. It looks good. I might play around with the new feature in the future. You can see some of the results here:
